Oporto

Oporto

The capital of northern Portugal gave the name to the country and to one of the noblest wines in the world, with a history of centuries. Port wine has its origin in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, a small town on the other side of the Douro River, but which is part of the metropolitan area of Porto. It is in Vila Nova de Gaia that most port wine ages, but it is in the Douro region that it is produced. Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia remain today a unique twin city with a fascination of its own and is also the starting point for discoveries of all the wines of the north of the country, those of the Douro, Minho and Bairrada but also from Trás-os-Montes to the northeast of the Douro.
